Whaly Boat FAQs

Q. What are Whaly boats made of?

A. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), a very versatile and strong plastic.

Q. Are Whaly boats indestructible?

A. Not quite! They are very tough and can withstand rough seas, coast, terrain (and even axes). They just bounce back. There are plenty of wild YouTube videos to prove it.

Q. Are Whaly boats unsinkable?

A. The Whaly is a double-walled robust boat manufactured from high-grade plastic (polyethylene) – it's almost unsinkable and indestructible. All Whaly boats pass a European Safety Directive test, which involves a swamp test.

Q. How can I fix a hole in a Whaly boat?

A. In the unlikely event of a hole, the Whaly can be hot air welded, or a flexible epoxy can be used in some cases.

Q. Does UV degradation affect Whaly boats?

A. No. The Whaly manufacturing process uses 100% colour-fast polyethylene.

Q. Can a bilge pump be fitted to a Whaly boat?

A. Yes, they can best be fixed to one of the bench boxes. The Whaly 400, 455 and 500 models have self-draining cockpits.

Q. What does the ‘R’ or 'Pro' mean on some Whaly boats?

A. These are the ‘Professional’ boats (435R, 455R, 500R, 500R80). A second layer of Aerated Polyethylene is shot into the mould while the first layer is still hot. You end up with an extra thick hull moulding that is more rigid and stronger than the standard model. Usually the ‘R’ or the Pro models have a higher horsepower rating.

Q. What is the best engine for a Whaly boat?

A. This really depends on the application and personal choice. We are very happy to advise you.

Q. What colours are available?

A. There are 10 colours available, some more vibrant than others. Dark grey appears to be the most popular for recreational use.

Q. How quickly can I get a Whaly?

A. We keep most models in stock in Shepperton (Surrey), depending on the time of year. A factory order from Holland takes about four weeks, but always ask about availability.

Q. Is a Whaly boat a RIB?

A. No, it’s not. The Whaly is a rigid boat; it can look like some RIBs and inflatables, but it is entirely different. A lot more inner space is on offer because of the lack of bulky tubes... and you won’t get a puncture.

Q. Is the Whaly a good tender?

A. Yes, it is very stable to step into. A tender will suffer from neglect, but a Whaly just shrugs this off. A boat for life and totally low maintenance!

Q. How do you pronounce Whaly?

A. Good question, as the name is often mispronounced! Try this: ‘Wail-ee’. It's definitely not 'wally'.

Q. Can I trail my Whaly boat?

A. Yes, of course you can. Whaly recommend a bunked trailer. Only the 500 models require a braked trailer - we supply these.

Q. How do I get a Whaly boat package quote?
